Wikipedia has been put down as long as I’ve been in school and used the computer as a source for research, which has been since around 6th grade. Growing up I was told never, never, NEVER use Wikipedia because it’s not always accurate. As you learn what to look for and what is true and what you may need to look into further, it can be a very helpful starting place. When you begin researching topics on Wikipedia it gives to other options for sources in that area. When you first enter the site http://www.wikipedia.org/ you have the opportunity to choose which language you’d like to continue in. which can be helpful to a lot of people. Then all you do is choose a topic and research it. At the bottom of the page is where you can find other information that you can look at.
I agree with you that Wikipedia can be of some use to student when doing research. Unfortunately, most students fail to realize the need to evauate sources and tend to overuse Wikipedia as a source. For these reasons, I believe that we most limit students in their use of Wikipedia. Jeff M.
ReplyDeleteWikipedia is a wonderful resource that has the most info on what a person might be looking for. It is a great starting point or just a place to get an idea about something. Like Jeff said students need to realize the full credibility of the Wiki. J.Litton
